SYMBIOREM Stakeholder-science collaboration Event

4 Sep 2025

Utö, Sweden)

In the context of its annual consortium meeting, the SYMBIOREM project organises an open event, which aims to showcase the work of the local demo site aimed at the phosphorus and metal recovery from the marine sediment in the Baltic Sea at Utö island.

The workshop will not only cover the demo site activities at Utö island; it will also provide specific insights on the stakeholder engagement process led by the SYMBIOREM demo site leader, the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). This is an essential element of the SYMBIOREM co-creation approach, aimed to ensure that bioremediation practices are developed in cooperation with local insight and stakeholder participation.

To showcase the cooperation between the SYMBIOREM project partners and the main stakeholders in the Baltic Sea case, representatives of the Initiativ Utö foundation will participate and explain the synergy established to increase awareness of local communities and to assure the involvement of local citizens in the implementation of solutions aimed at the recovery of phosphorus and metals from the marine environment.

Additionally, a second example of stakeholder-science collaboration within the SYMBIOREM project will be presented by Thames21 and Peabody, the landowner and member of the catchment partnership committee at the Gallions Lake pilot site (UK) which Thames21 hosts, who will explain the collaborative work to achieve effective catchment management and installation of floating islands.
